ALEXANDER WANG X H&M: Fair Trade or Child Labour?

With the hype surrounding the new collaboration between Alexander Wang and H&M, many people were excited to line up and get their favourite pieces from the collection. Other fashion enthusiasts weren’t so impressed. German duo Carl Jakob Haupt and David Kurt Karl Roth decided to film a short which depicts a small factory in India with young children sewing labels onto garments similar to said Alexander Wang collection.

The pair that makeup Dandy Diary has said that the film is a “homage” to Wang, and describe it as a “promotion-video for the Wangmaster and the swedish junk-giant.” The film has gained a lot of traction, and in turn has caused an uproar with people on social media.

H&M has recently come out and said that the collection was not made in India, but in China, Turkey, and Italy. “H&M does not accept child labour. Our child labour policy is based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the International Labour Organisation”.

Whether or not Adidas sports wearing Dandy Diary is genuine in their efforts to bring awareness, the film does open up discussion surrounding child labour and the efforts to reduce the number of factories like this.
